...but dogs are loud and too much damn work and always want to be up on you, and you actually have to take them outside and what not. I just dog-sat a few weeks back, and I tell you, I'm fine with the cat. This was an old dog too, I can't imagine having a new one that actually has energy. Dogs are too dependent for me. I know dogs can be trained to do things, but in modern society what do we actually need a dog to do for us?

I meant for the average person. I realize there are specialist dogs that are able to do wonderful things, but the average dog for the average dog isn't sniffing your piss for cancer and fighting terrorism. Cats have had uses over the years as well, maybe if you Chicagoans could figure that out, you'd have less rats running around

i love both dogs and cats but cats are much easier to live with and less maintenance. he also stays out of my way unless he wants 9 lives-- then he meows to let me know what's up.

I don't understand the whole dog thing. At least not when you're young. Maybe in old age as a companion or when you have kids, but I can't understand why a 20-something would want a dog. It's basically a lot of the responsibility of having kids (at least socially) without the hope that some day it will learn to go to the bathroom on its own.
